Multi Frequency GPR vs Single Frequency – Which is the Right One for You?

Choosing the best GPR system for your needs can be a challenging task if you do not know where to start. We’re here to help.

Multi frequency GPR systems and single frequency units are both popular for a variety of applications. This is why we offer both varieties. In fact, US Radar is the first manufacturer to develop a true triple-frequency radar – the Quantum Imager.

Deciding on the best GPR system for your needs boils down to a few key factors: What kind of work do you do? What kind of soil do you work in? What target(s) are you looking for? Lastly, how far down do you need to see?

Having an understanding of these needs prior to adding a GPR system to your equipment arsenal can aid you greatly in deciding which type of system is right for you. Though there are always subtle nuances that could prove exceptions to the rule, here are some general tips to help you make your decision.

What Multi Frequency GPR and Single Frequency Systems Does US Radar Offer?

US Radar currently offers five core varieties of cart-based systems. They are as follows:

Multi Frequency

Quantum Imager – The world’s first true triple-frequency radar antenna. Collects data at low, middle, and high frequency ranges simultaneously – allowing for instant cross comparison and enhanced data clarity.

GPRover – The same innovative triple-frequency antenna found in our Quantum Imager. The GPRover also features advanced built-in GPS integration for high location accuracy within 5cm.

Single Frequency

Note: All US Radar single frequency systems feature self-calibrating antennas, optional onboard and 3rd party GPS integration, and the ability to instantly process and share data directly from the field. 

Q5 – Our best-selling single-frequency antenna centered at 500 MHz. In ideal conditions, this antenna will achieve depths between zero and 15 ft. (4.5m). Some popular applications for the Q5 include utility locating (pipes, fiber optics, water boxes, valves, conduit, etc.), law enforcement (forensic investigation), and environmental conservation (locating buried tanks, voids, drums, and assessing landfill limits).

Q10 – Centered at 1000 MHz, the Q10 offers superior shallow-depth scanning and stunning high clarity capabilities. This is US Radar’s most popular system for those looking to scan at depths between zero and 5 ft. (1.5m). Common applications include bridge deck scanning, structural analysis, and concrete scanning.

Q25 – Our deepest-penetrating single-frequency antenna centered at 250 MHz. With powerful low-resolution scanning, this system is designed to scan between zero and 30 ft. (10m) beneath the surface. It is commonly used for geotechnical surveys, deep utility locating, and analyzing tunnels and other deeply buried targets.

I Have a Single Frequency System but Want to Upgrade – Can I Do That?

Many of our customers use both single and multi frequency systems in the daily work operations. Others may elect to upgrade from a single frequency to multi frequency system later on as their needs or service models change. There are also customers that are lifelong single frequency users that repeatedly generate a similar high return on investment. Though upgrading is an option, it is not always necessary depending on your project requirements.
